The Importance of Staying Hydrated This Summer For Seniors

As the summer months approach it is important for the elderly to make sure that they make staying hydrated a priority. As our bodies age we undergo natural physiological changes that make us more susceptible to dehydration. Our metabolic rates lower, meaning we need fewer calories to function and thus get fewer fluid into our bodies. Some seniors even lose their sense of thirst. Because of this it is extremely important for the elderly to stay sun smart, and stay out of the heat and sun as much as possible. It is also important to stay hydrated, Make sure you are drinking at least 2 litres a day of non-caffeinated fluids, including water and fluids found in fruits and vegetables

Most of the elderly are also on a veriety of different medications, some medications can affect the fluid balance in the body making the elderly more prone to dehydration. Make sure to review your medications with your GP
